A crowd of more than forty people braved the rain on Saturday at the workers’ memorial in the grounds of St Philip’s Cathedral in Birmingham. They had gathered to mark Workers’ Memorial Day.
The kay note speaker was Shelly Asquith, the TUC’s national Health, Safety and Well-being Policy Officer. The event closed with the laying of wreaths. The picture shows the one minute silence to remember those who have lost their lives through work-related accidents and diseases.
135 people died in work-related accidents last year, but almost 50,000 were killed by work related diseases, including more than 7,500 victims of asbestos.
