Long prison sentences for people who dumped asbestos waste in Staffordshire

The prison sentences for people who dump asbestos in the countryside are usually derisory. But two people who dumped waste, including asbestos, on a massive scale have been given substantial prison sentences at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

Raymond Bowden, 64 of Liverpool Road, Church Lawton was sentenced to 30 months in prison.  Joe Frizell, 48 of Crewe Road, Shavington, was sentenced to 2 years. Other directors of their company received fines and suspended sentences. Over a two year period they had created an illegal dump on Bonnie Braes Farm in Staffordshire where they deposited 100,000 tonnes of waste.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said:    “We are glad to see the outcome of these prosecutions and will continue to work tirelessly to tackle environmental crime. If people suspect criminal activity, they should report it to our 24-hour incident hotline 0800 807060 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111.”
